Keralites Are Lazzzzy...

One Hartal day has gone!
What was it for??? Who cares! All that matters is that we got a leave... doing nothing, going nowhere...

It is heard a lot that, keralites are becoming more lazier, everyone is longing for a holiday, not just any holiday but specifically a 'hartal'... so that they can be at home doing nothing! You won't find  lazy people like this anywhere...etc.

Now my question is , when do we take rest?
Children rest only when they are tired, youth may take rest if he has nothing to do...
What about an adult house holder???
He is more responsible than the above mentioned two categories. He might have a family...
Would he be able to take rest if his children are crying out of hunger??? Then no matter whoever announces a hartal, whatever be the reason he will have to go out and find food; provided he is a responsible father/ guardian.

So when we ‘say’ everybody loves hartal, doesn't that imply we have enough to spend a day doing no job.... Isn't it a good sign that our standard of life is improving?!(I wouldn't say 100% Keralites like hartal, since still there are people who live on daily wages, but anyway we are developing...)

Doubter: Well, you are saying that the ‘laziness’ implies our standard of life is improving… I’m asking, does it say you ‘can’ be lazy. Do you realize we loss crores on every hartal!

Let's Talk About HDI, Human Development Index.

“On this republic day it’s really a matter to be proud; that we are the third largest economy in the world!”

“So?”

“Don’t you feel anything?! We are developing!”

“How?! Does it imply so?”

“Ok, then go and see the GDP of India, and convince yourself where we stand among other nations and don’t you see our Chaandrayaan, MOM and upcoming neutrino observatory etc???”

“of course! I do see all of them; we are one of the toppers in all these things… I’m not saying we are not developing but asking does the economic growth imply we are developing?
In terms of GDP; we are 10th according to World Bank and IMF and we are 11th according to UN and CIA fact book studies of the year 2013. Canada, Australia, Italy, Russia, Spain are also have similar GDP that of us. Switzerland, Netherlands and Norway etc are behind us. Kuwait is far behind than India.
Now let me ask you, do you think India is the best place to live among these mentioned countries?”

“No! Not at all…”

“Why?”

“Because India doesn't have good facilities as that of these mentioned nations…”

“Facilities in the sense?”

“Like, good shelters to live, availability of food, hospitals, roads, public transport, etc…”

“All these things are available in the cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad etc isn't it???”

“Yeah, but not everywhere in India…”

Isn't that self-contradicting?”

“How?”

“You were excited about our economic development…”

“Even you agreed with me ie India is developing.”

“Yes, I do. But the scales are different. My scales do not include GDP or economic growth…”

“Why, doesn't it play a big role?”

“It plays a role, but I won’t say it is big!”

“Then what are your scales?”

“It could be GDP per capita, or Human Development Index (HDI), Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) or Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) etc”

“Why are those important than what I said?”

“Because, it includes your ‘facilities’ along with economic development.
Let me ask you, what is the goal of economic development?”

“Ultimately… development of citizen.”

“Yes, then what is development? What are the measures?”

“Are you asking me now?”

“No, I was thinking aloud. It can be graphically represented as follows…

It’s recurring. More the human development so does the economic development, for a sustainable development, economy should support human development. Don’t you think it matters?”

“Yeah, somewhat… explain more about it.”

“Ok, let’s talk about HDI first.”

“What’s it?”

“It is a scale of development of a nation. A measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, standard of living and quality of life, income indices etc. More the HDI more developed the country is, created by Dr.Amartya Sen and a Pakistani economist Dr.Mahbub ul Huq"

“mhmm… where do we -India- stand in world? Do you have similar schematic diagram?”

“Here are those…the nations have color shown in the below indicator according to their HDI

This is based on the data 2013.

“Oh!”

Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Netherlands, US, Germany, New Zealand, and Canada are the toppers in terms of HDI whereas most of them are similar to us in GDP

“What about Indian states?”

“Based on data-2008”

“Unbelievable!... is it true?”

“Ha ha ha…! You may convince yourself collecting data… see the below table, ”

“Kerala is always first, it had achieved 1.000 once then decreased to 0.911 still has very high HDI. Goa is in second place.”

“Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh (up to 2010), Tamilnadu show a consistent development.”

Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, West Bengal, Punjab (decreasing trend), and Andhra Pradesh shares similar HDI’s

Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh have a decreasing trend”

“So on an average are you telling me that India is not developing?”

“Never… India is developing…let’s compare the development of nations in terms of HDI, higher the slope, higher the rate of development.

… Norway has the least slop in the rate, but it has achieved 0.944 from 0.793 within 25 years, which ranks around 25 in GDP.
Egypt ranks around 40 in GDP but has similar development growth rate that of India… Where as we stand around 10 in GDP.
So, what I’m saying is that,
India is not developing as its economy develops… so it needn't be sustainable. For a sustainable development as I said before, economy should support human welfare…

“It’s enough for today. Shall we go and have a coffee?”

"Sure..."

Unleashing The Glorious Past...

Today I learned the story 'A Grain As Big As A Hen's Egg' by Leo Tolstoy from my school. It was about the glorious past we human had and the degradation of the present life…

(Do you want to read the story? here is the link:
http://www.online-literature.com/tolstoy/2898/ )

Teacher said the past was very beautiful, everyone were healthier and lived longer than that of the present…
I was doubtful about it.
I came back to home and asked my grandmother ‘was the olden days better than the present?’
She said ‘yes of course my kid; in my childhood everywhere we could see paddy fields… everyone had at least a small farm so that we didn't even need to go anywhere for vegetables… and most of the family owned minimum one cow…

I asked the same question to my grandfather,
he said ‘I’m sad about your generation… you all are being sucked by the internet, television and worthless computer games… my childhood was laudable… every day we dived into books…Now; reading has become  a history! No one reads a book!...do you even know the smell of a new book I wonder… you have the e-version nowadays… there was a time of handwritten letters could any e-mails or message replace them? I don’t think…

What a disaster… I didn't want to live like this… let me look through the window… who knows if I the blue sky would be there tomorrow… I lost myself in my nightmare about the future…

‘Why you look sad; did the teacher scold you?’ it was my elder brother and sister.
All that I had was the story of glorious past and the disastrous present.

My brother said,
‘Do you want to see the past? Come with me… let’s go a few years back ’
Ah! I forgot to tell you; we owned a time traveler… by which you can travel to any time to any place… I don’t know the technical details…

We spend several hours in the past events… you won’t even be able to imagine how weird it was…
Some of them are listed below.

It was the time when printing technology was invented I saw a group of blubbery old men around a tea shop who were saying that the printing technology has destroyed the singularity of handwritten books… and because of the same it’ll be available everywhere, in the nearest future… no one will know the value of exertion to get a book… books become so cheap…

Going a little bit back again – the age of pamphlets- there were also a group of aged people who were criticizing that era. When numerous pamphlets were produced there were several groups of youngsters in most of the junction discussing the information they got from the pamphlets; and the criticism was that these pamphlets make the generation lazy; spending a lots of time just on talking and doing nothing worthy…
Interestingly it was the era of Sir Isaac Newton!

Then the last was the bronze age there I met an old man who was traveling from place to place. He too was sad about the next generation; he was saying that ‘human are not meant to live permanently in a certain area. He has been created to travel all around the world… my past was glorious…these children have lost all the joy of life!

Wow! everyone had their own stories about the glorious past… and it was merely relative

When I came back home; the exact space and time I left.
My sister was there waiting for me with some data…I've given  some of them below…

Amazing!
Grandma may be right there were paddy fields and cows everywhere but what about the
productivity?!

Thanks to internet… :)

About Life expectancy;
It was 41 in 1960’s. Within ten years it has become 48 in 2010 it is almost 67...

I suppose if there wasn't this internet facility I wouldn't have come across these data so soon

Team Work!

Team work!
What’s a team work?
Oxford dictionary says; ‘the combined action of a group, especially when effective and efficient’.
Why do we need a team work? Or why do we even need a ‘team’?!
A sociologist or an anthropologist or an ecologist would say human are social animals by nature, that live in a group of several animals of same species under interdependence… in which the key of an individual’s survival depends on the depth and wideness of connection that he has with others in the group; hence we perceive the importance of a team.
Even if we don’t know all these things; we know the importance of a team work; say in a cricket team.
There are strictly eleven members including the captain, two umpires and two scorers in a cricket team.
There is certain equipment to be used in it; you can’t play cricket with tennis ball!
A collection of rules regarding scoring and winnings…
In brief there are 42 WRITTEN LAWS for the sport cricket!!!...
All the team members will be TRAINED under these laws; for the team to WIN.
If someone disobeys any of the laws; even if it is a single person he will be ‘corrected’. If he repeats it again and again he will be expelled. We know he must be expelled for ‘our’ team to win. If there is any insubordinate in our national team we the society will force the team to expel him, because we don’t want to lose the game because of that person…

Doubter:I had a doubt!
Can the society be called as a team?
Are there similar laws?
Are these laws being obeyed?
If NO; why???  Is it because of the lack of proper training? (Who are the trainer and trainee????)
If YES; is that the secret behind the victory of any society?

“Colleagues; will you answer the doubter?”
